The football community in Lugazi Municipality, Buikwe District, Uganda, is in disbelief following the tragic death of one of their players on the field.
Herbert Afaayo, 21, was said to have collapsed and died on Thursday, January 6, after colliding with a goalkeeper during training.
On Thursday, January 6, he was training with the Lugazi Municipal football club at their makeshift training ground in Geregere, a suburb of Lugazi, when he was killed.
According to local media, Afaayo was attempting to score when he collided with the team’s goalkeeper, Geoffrey Leku, before collapsing.
The team’s attempts to resuscitate him as the first line of defence failed, and their attempts to rush him to the hospital were too late.
“He [Afaayo] was running fast with the ball before colliding with the goalkeeper and collapsing on the pitch,” the team’s head coach, Daniel Segawa told Daily Monitor Uganda on Friday morning.
