Gabriel Boric was declared the winner of Chile’s presidential election on Sunday night, December 19, following an early concession from his far-right rival, José Antonio Kast.

Kast conceded defeat less than an hour and a half after the polls closed, with roughly half of the ballots counted.

Boric, a leftist candidate, won with 56 per cent of the vote after the majority of the votes were counted, while Kast trailed him with 44 per cent.

Boric, 35, is Chile’s youngest president in its history.

Boric promised to do his “best to rise to this tremendous challenge” in a phone call with outgoing President Sebastián Piera.

Boric was a former student protest leader who supported mass protests against inequality and alleged corruption in Chile in 2019 and 2020.
