Afia Schwar does not fall into the definition of the word “celebrity.”
Since the price of becoming a celebrity in Ghana has been reduced, it has made it quite possible for her and other loud-mouthed individuals to have social capital cheaply.
A celebrity, as defined, is a famous person who has paid his or her dues in sports, entertainment, politics, or any other accepted field. Afia Schwar is not a celebrity, but a noisemaker.
What price has she paid anyway? Is it the aspersions she casts at others or the coarse unintelligible arguments she makes on Instagram to stay relevant? Or is it when she shows her paunchy body to resurrect attention whenever it’s waning?
The bar has been lowered, the standards have dropped, and this has made it possible for people who spew gibberish and irrelevant pieces of nonsense to make a name for themselves.
Afia Schwar has a penchant for jumping on trending issues, picking on others and making a mountain out of a molehill. That is the fragile yet useless foundation upon which she has built her fleeting yet abhorrent social clout.
On the back of that, she feels emboldened and sometimes motivated by the eyeballs that watch her and the ears that listen to her jabs, innuendos, and hot vendettas that she throws directly at people without considering their or her reputational damage.
How could such a person be described as a celebrity and be accorded a seat at the table of distinguished men and women who have risen from the doldrums of nothingness to the high echelons of power and influence by dint of diligence, persistence, and honesty?
Those who describe Afia Schwar as a socialite, a popular person, or a public figure are very charitable with words and very kind to her. It is gross dishonesty on the side of any intelligent person who closes his or her eyes to the obvious and tries to flatter her with words.
She is an untamed clanging piece of metal (cymbals) who has been allowed to wallow in her preconceived world of mediocrity, tomfoolery, and abject ignorance.
My opinions about her have never changed and will not change if Ghanaians continue to see her as a controversial figure and give her attention and plaudits for playing to their fancy whenever she decides to go on the “mouth diarrhoea” tangent.
It’s about time value is placed on what deserves value.
People who, for one reason or another, have garnered attention are not necessarily celebrities. We need to ask what they have achieved and ensure that the celebrity status is placed on people who have worked their socks off diligently to attain it.
The space needs to be sanitized where people like Afia Schwar need to be tamed, a lock put on her mouth and taken on whenever she tries to play her antics.
Clanging metals cymbals are a nuisance to societal peace and sanity when they are not restricted or separated.
And I think it’s high time Afia Schwar and several other people who fall under this category were silenced for good.
If Ghana were a serious country, Afia Schwar would never be classified as a celebrity.
