2021 brought me real sadness – Bill Gates opens up on divorce
Bill Gates, the billionaire philanthropist, has spoken out about life after divorce.
After 27 years of marriage, the Microsoft founder and his ex-wife Melinda divorced earlier this year.
Bill Gates has penned an open letter on his website months after his divorce to discuss how the last 12 months have gone.
“Even though I think the things I’ve been working on are by far the most interesting part of my year, I know a lot of people are interested in a subject closer to home: my divorce,” he said.
“Melinda and I are still running our foundation together and have settled into a good new working rhythm, but I can’t deny that it’s been a year of great personal sadness for me.”
“No matter what the change is, adapting to it is never easy.
“I’ve been impressed by how resilient my loved ones, especially my children, have been during this difficult time.”
Bill Gates also commented on the pandemic, calling it a “strange and disorienting experience.”
He also discussed how difficult it has been for him to watch his children grow up and leave the family home.
He stated: “My personal world has never felt smaller than it has in the last year.
“Beyond what you’ve probably seen in the news, my family has gone through a lot of changes. My oldest daughter, Jenn, married this fall, and her wedding was the highlight of my year.
“Phoebe, our youngest, graduated from high school and went off to college.
“Since my son Rory is also away at school, I’m officially an empty nester – the house is much quieter now that there aren’t a bunch of teenagers hanging around all the time.
“I miss having them at home, even if it’s easier to focus on reading a book or working these days.”
